Odds of Dealing Covering MAS Under Immissions Warranty?

Thank you, JCE, Black Mercedes, and Royaiii.

To replace or not replace my 1997 C230's mass airflow sensor?

(Checing my MB Warranted Emission Related Components MY 97 Federal (Gasoline), the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF/MAS) is covered for only two years or twentyfour thousand miles).

So I am on my own with this one.

Independent got stored code 170 a month ago. After two hours of testing, he could not 100% determine what set it off. (He showed me the printout displaying being .001 rich twice in 498 miles). He reset the computer and sent me on my way.

CE light came back on in the first 750 miles. I am torn between spending hours having him trouble shoot the cause of the fault vs. buying a new MAS and installing it myself (hoping it will do the trick).

What would you do?

(My 1997 C230 needs a new Mass Airflow Sensor. The car has 80,000 miles and is outside the standard warranty. What are the odds of the dealer replacing the MAS under the emmissions warranty?

My 99 S420 just came from the shop for fixing its MAF. Eventhough, I still have the 4 year/50k mile warranty left; they said it was covered under the emmisions warranty of 8 years. My MAF sensor was defective causing both $2500 a peice cats to go bad and fouling the 02 sensors. Since my car originally was from Canada, the rust had glued the exhaust causing them to replace those components (both resonator and muffler), too. Make them try to fix it under the warranty but I know they probably know a way to get yout to pay $82 an hour. What was strange in my case is that I never got a check engine light from the defective parts. I just smelled sulfur while driving normally.

I think my job taught Mercedes a lesson to try to make better MAF sensors. I think the heat kills these sensors. In the m119 engine, the sensor sits in the V of the engine and in my M104 engine it is right above the headers. My 97 E320 has only 38k miles, so I am waiting to see the Check Engine Electronic sign.

If they squiggle themselves out of covering it, then pay them anyways because you don't want to be forced to get new cats or O2 sensors, down the road due to a inexperinenced mechanic. I think maximum amount you might be paying is $600. Ask them if you can buy the MAF sensor from fastlane and tell them to install it.

Have you seen where the MAS is on the M111 engine? Install it yourself if you're paying the full tab...

The owner's book on my 98 C230 says the federal Emissions warranty is 2yrs/24,000 miles, except for starred items which are waranteed to 8 yrs/80k miles. The MAS wasn't a starred item in my 1998 book. For CA and Massachusets, the emissions warantee for everything, including the MAS, ECU, etc. is 7/70. You might check your 1997 books to see if anything was different for you (ie. mas included on the 8/80 fed emissions warantee?)
