About that 240D: I need a car that can cruise comfortably at 70-75mph. This car is sooooo slow, is it capable of highway speeds like this? Thanks

This car will go this fast but the engine is at a high RPM at this speed and the car is quite noisy as a result.

Hey why don't you look for a 300D turbo? They are a little faster. I was looking at a 79 240D with a 4-spd manual the other day for $1000.00. Of course it needed a paint job and had a few rust spots, had no sunroof or power windows, but it was slow slow slow! Then I looked at a 82 300D automatic that was quite a bit faster and was in much better shape for $2000.00. Oh, neither one had a working ac either (YUCK!)

TWBILL: did you mean to say a 300SD (turbo) was much faster or the 300D (non-turbo) was much faster. I am curious if there is much power difference between a 240D 4spd and a 300D auto. I heard there isn't much difference.

The 82 300D is turbocharged.

The 240D 4 spd. has to be the most reliable MB ever. It is still much slower than even an auto 300D. Mine will run up to the governed engine speed at around 89MPH(indicated). I know it won't go any faster because if you depress the clutch the engine speed stays the same. Getting up there is another story. The car doesn't like going uphill. Anyways, if you wake up feeling like Mario Andretti you can always get in your 240D for training. Floor the engine to the max and dump the clutch. The tires will fight for grip but the inherent traction control in all 240Ds will soon take care of that and only allow maybe half a revolution of wheelspin. About 5mph after the first dot on the speedometer you powershift into second and enjoy the sound of the engine all the way up to 37MPH. The shift to 3rd and a sharp corner comes up. You don't lift because somehow the 240D manages to control all the power given to the real wheels and prevents oversteer. The front wheels do their best to slow you down if you happen to be going too fast(this is early MB stability control at work). Remember, don't feel upset if a lady in a Dodge Caravan full of kids overtakes you while you are in racing mode. She is probably not having as much fun!
