steering moaning 1984 300d

Hi, my 300D moans and groans when I turn corners. Fluid level looks okay. I need ideas about what could be causing it. If I need to replace the power steering pump and lines is it a hard job?

Thanks in advance, Phil

Not at all.

When the pump is off, lift the front tires off the ground and turn the steering wheel lock to lock. This will get the remaining old fluid out of the steering box.

Leave the front end up/off the ground... install fresh pump/filter and with the reservoir full turn the wheel back and forth again a few times...refill the reservoir as it comes down. Do that a few times before you start the car and bleed the system under power.

Might get a fresh set of belts while you're at it. I recommend Genuine ONLY for the belts..the aftermarket contitechs are coming from China now

Good luck with it:)

I wouldn't remove the pump from the car just yet - they can make groaning sounds when the fluid and filter is too dirty.

The fluid should be clean - the book says to use Dexron II

To drain the fluid see here =>

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/2768406-post5.html

Then change the filter in the power steering pump - make sure you put the clip for the spring back in the same position.

Refill the pump with the correct fluid - jack the car off the front wheels and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock with the engine off - the fluid level should need to be refilled.

Once you have safely filled the system then you can start the engine and see if the level needs to be adjusted again.

(Many people describe filling the system with the engine running - seems like a stressful experience to me as the fluid level will drop quickly potentially running the pump dry which isn't a good thing)

If the fluid turns dirty again you ought to repeat the drain and fill procedure until it stays clean.
