tapping under valve cover (passenger side)

On my 450 SL (99,000 miles) I had a moderate oil leak, I just replaced my valve cover gaskets on both sides and what a big difference on the oil leak....just about all gone.

My question is that when I was taking my passenger side valve cover off I accidently bumped out of place the oil fill tube. I think I put it back on ok....but now it seems that there is a light tapping sound coming from that side the first couple of mins. after I start the car....it then seems to go away. I don't remember the sound before....

Did I do something?

What should I look for?

Thanks in advance!
Mike

You need to replace the plastic bits for the oiler tube very soon. I wouldn't run the engine/drive the car until you do. The plastic pieces are fragile and knocking the tube can break them. The ticking you are hearing is likely due to a lack of oil on the cam lobes. Running without oil flowing over the cam lobes will eat up the cam.

Yepper.....it looks like you are right. I took the valve cover off and the two end pieces are broke. (the middle 3 look perfect)

So.......now I only hope the local Benz dealer (who I am NOT a fan of) will have these pieces so that I can drive and show her this weekend!

Thanks Again!

FastLane and PartsShop have them. Plus, through FastLane you can get overnight airborne for a small fee. Supports this site and keeps you from having to visit the stealer!!!

You won't believe what happened.....I called all the Dealers between Cleveland and Pittsburgh...they were all either closed or did not have them..... However, a local Ex Head Mercedes Tech who opened his own shop years ago not only had them, but did not even charge me for them!!!!! If he is trying to get my future Benz repair business...it worked!!

I put the new ends on the oil filler tube and put everything back together again and the tapping is gone along with the oil leak. So I went to a show and a cruise today.....

Thanks again!
