Mercedes 450SEL Wagon

Here's a couple photo's of this rare wagon, I noticed locally recently. Doing a search shows there may have been ~123 made, but someone else might have better info. It's sitting at a local repair shop, maybe the owner is on this site to give more info too

Mercedes 450SEL Wagon

Sometimes I think it’s a shame there weren’t more of these made, but with the w116, it seems there were just so many better looking wagons of the era. Particularly bothersome to me with this particular one is the fact that the C-pillar lines look so bad. Curved door lines. Straight wagon hatch area lines. Don’t get me wrong, I’d buy it, just not for much more than a regular w116.

I always like to point out car makers that use their sedan platforms and just add to it to make a wagon (Honda accord, Toyota camry come to mind) as it appears what was done to create this car. As opposed to a dedicated and different body to make one as is the case with most other Mercedes wagons

Crayford conversion. A few of these have shown up on Bring a Trailer

Interesting styling exercise but useless as a wagon with that high loading sill. I wonder if they relocated the fuel tank or left it behind the rear seats. Leaving it behind the rear seats makes it really useless as a wagon.

I don’t know Crayford. I want my custom MB wagon built by Binz.

I have a 1979 300STD (and yes, it IS contagious)

This S Class wagon was formerly owned by George Chambers of George Chambers and The Country Gentlemen

Mr Chambers told me he used to haul his stand-up bass around in it.

Mr Chambers told me it was hit by a stop sign runner.

I have a donor W116 I will take the front clip from for the repair.

When I start the project I'll post a thread

I used to see that vehicle occasionally when I was dropping my 300D off to be serviced at David Kehl’s shop in San Antonio. I think it looks cool. I’m glad you are going to save it.

There might have been styling exercises but MB never sold a 116 wagon. I don’t think Binz did either.
