Drifting off topic -

Hmm... I don’t know how many forum members move on.

The 210 can be controversial. Folks on this thread have shared with me their unfortunate experience with 210s. Respectfully, I don’t spend more time or money keeping my 210s on the road than I did with my 126s. I still appreciate 126s but I don’t regret going newer. Maybe it’s just me getting old :p

If you live in an area that salts the roads (and you drive in the winter) you have likely moved on. I moved from a 126 to a 124 to a couple of 210s and will be moving again (probably to a 212). All were/are great vehicles.

Not moving on yet. I only have the car since a year and a half and have put quite some money and time in it so far. For $2500 I can find easily another one in decent shape here in LA. But then I have to start all over.

The long term plan I have for the 300SE is to eventually put an electric motor in it. Within a couple of years there will be drop in kits available as it is already for water cooled Porsche’s and VW’s now.

If you don't have a trans jack and a lift, a diy trans replacement is a challenge. I did them balancing the tranny on a floor jack and on my back when I was younger and farting around under the car was easier. But looking back on it, ugh. $750 or $1000 labor charge it seems worth it.

On the topic of the 124/210/211, I've had three 124s (603) and am restoring one now and when they're good, they're great. My 210 was a disappointment since it rusted badly but mechanically it was a good value. I absolutely love the 211. It is a fine driving machine and one of the most comfortable cars I've ever driven and much like a well maintained 124. She is now at 135k miles and I'm planning to drive her a few more years.

Much easier to pull one on a W126 than a W124. I would do it, but it is not hard at all to me to R&R. Hell, I build my own transmissions...

Buy that trans jack from Harbor Freight with the 20% off coupon. Shanghai a pal with beer and some grub. Easy job. Starting at 10am can probably have car on the road by 6pm your first time out.

I work slow as I torque everything to spec.

BTW - if this is on your 300SE, R&R the idler bushing while exhaust is off. This job is not possible otherwise. Also, consider flex discs while the driveshaft is out.

If you have a paved surface to work on it's not bad.

If you're working in the mud it's an awful time.

I've pulled transmissions in both environments. Just remember to be gentle when reinstalling.

Lots of people on here telling you it is dead nuts easy. My opinion stands. If you have doubts in your ability and tools to do the job, then don't attempt it.

$1000 is chump change for a job this difficult and critical to the well-being of your ride.

there are two ways to do the trans job, one is removing the transmission, the other is to remove the whole engine attached to the transmission with a hoist.

Both take equal grunt if done on the ground.

Got a transmission from Sun Valley Mercedes Transmissions, had a lovely chat with the owner David, great guy to do business with. He used to have another company Mercedes Dismantlers in Sun Valley where I used to get hard to find parts from for my 300CD back in the early 2000's. $1750 out the door, no core charge and it will be installed by a mechanic in VanNuys he recommended: Boulevard Auto Repair, a Mercedes specialist since the seventies. I should have the car back in a couple of days.

Got the car back today and it's an entire new animal, the shifts are suuuuuper smooth and the car got a lot quieter, no more whining sound in the lower gears. Sun Valley did a rebuild of the old transmission, the owner told me it was in really bad shape and some parts were even welded to the housing and needed to be pressed out. They also replaced the engine rear main seal (was leaking), front flex disk (play around the bolts) and a new transmission mount.

Together with the exhaust work in December spent way to much money, can't be to selective, choosing jobs, in the next couple of months to make up for it...
