wrong wheel bearing kit? W124 1987
I ordered and got Meyle wheel bearing kits for the 87. first one does not seem to fit. I've changed quite a few wheel bearings in my life so I was expecting this to go like the others. The bearings almost fit on the shaft, almost - so close. I've never had to tap wheel bearings onto a shaft, just wondered if I'm missing something or are these ...ahem...modern parts substandard?

You have the wrong kit, These use pretty standard taper bearings available at any parts shop.
to further mess with you the last editions of the W124 have different spindles than the early w124 - they use different size bearings.

That's what I thought too. Replacement bearings are on the way. This kit is darned close, but no cigar. The incorrect bearings sit perfectly in the old races. But the interior diameter is off by a couple of thousandths.
