M104 cam adjuster

Going to replace and not 100 percent about the procedure. Skip to where the timing is all lined up.. how do I set the adjuster so it’s retarded?

The engine rotates clockwise so when the cam is fully counter clockwise in the adjuster, its retarded.

Are the 4mm pins locking the cam gears while installing the adjuster?

Ok I think I understand how this thing works. Took the adjuster off to see how it work. The rod on the cam does slide freely and changes the idle of the engine if moved manually . I have voltage at the electrical connection. Seems like the magnet isn’t working. Is there a way to test? Perhaps the camshaft timer isn’t adjusted?
