om617 leaks diesel out of upper oil pan
1 Attachment(s)
Hi I am new to these forums and have a problem that I do not know how to go about. I have just finished swapping an om617 into a 87 jeep yj. When running I noticed diesel dripping out of the upper oil pan near the back of the motor by the transmission. There is no diesel in the oil so I do not know how it would drip from the back. The picture I tagged shows where the diesel is leaking from. Its a pretty rapid drip and if anyone can help me that would be awesome thanks.

Diesel is leaking from somewhere. Feel all the cloth-covered fuel lines that daisy-chain between the injectors, don't forget that #5 injector has a line on one barb and a plugged short line on the other barb.
If those lines aren't leaking, then check the hard fuel lines between injection pump and injectors, and then after that look at the rest of the fuel lines. |
all of the injector return lines are new the only leak I can see is on the oil filter the crush washer that holds it in needs to be replaced but I don't think that would cause it to leak out of the bottom of the oil pan through that hole

I think your leak is somewhere in the fuel system, so the lines at the injector at the back of the engine are suspect. How does the engine run? Are all of the metal fuel line braces and supports in place?

You'll probably get more attention on this if you post in the diesel discussion section.

If the fuel has been leaking for a while you might as well order a new engine mount. The combination of diesel, oil and PS fluid leaked onto it turns the rubber into goo rather quickly.

The motor mounts are brand new because I changed them when I swapped it in the jeep, the engine runs perfect I just installed monarch injector nozzles, and the fuel lines are bran new and is all soft tube.

Where I live, diesel fuel has an additive so that it will fluoresce (glow) under a black light. Get a black light, they make a cool LED version now, and see if you can trace the leak up to the source.

ill try that

When you replaced the nozzles did you use new heat shields?

so I started it up today and got it to drive for the first time injector 5 isn't leaking and neither is any of them and its not running from the top of the block so im stuck I was hoping that was the problem but there is no diesel running down the back of the block its just coming out from that hole.

Please let us know when you finally figure this out. That hole appears to be an opening into the bell housing (contains the flywheel and the connection to the transmission - clutch if manual or torque converter if automatic). The only fluid that should be present would be brake fluid (if hydraulic clutch - manual transmission) or ATF (auto transmission fluid). I cannot see how diesel fuel could be present in that area.

still haven't found it im just gonna drive it with it leaking at this point
