Trunk latch problem with convertible roof troubles

I have a 1998 SLK 230. I love the car but I'm having a slight difficulty closing the trunk lid. I have to slam it too hard to get it to latch. I tried to use metal cleaner, not WD40, but one from Seafoam and didn't have much luck with it. I applied some silicone grease to the moving parts, but still get the same problems.
Since the spring is on the way, I tried to open the roof and it doesn't respond. The light on the control button blinks as though it's supposed to come down but nothing. Pushing it forwards you can hear the motors working and the roof securing into place. The side windows rolled down once, but that was as far as I could get.
My question is, how much of the roof problem is connected to the truck latching problem? Also I need to replace the vinyl roll away cover, since the spring mechanism isn't rolling it away anymore. I know I need to keep it in place in the cradle to keep the button depressed.
Any thoughts?
