S-500 Window won't Auto UP!

My 1994 S 500 just came back from my local shop. The pass. rear window had gone Bang when rolled down and broke the regulator. Prior to this repair, the window would not go all the way up in auto mode. It would stop about 3/4 the way up and back down a couple of inches. The local shop then replaced the motor, thinking the current limiting circuit was NG. The window now goes all the way up BUT then it goes back down a couple of inches. They attempted to calibrate it using directions from Mercedes but nothing worked. They are now suggesting I take it to Mercedes.

Does anyone know the trick to get the window calibrated to allow auto up to work right? The other three windows seem ok.

Thanks to All
Mark

The motor has a "hall" effect counter built into it. IF the motor is installed at the point where the counter is at the min OR max amount, then the window won't synchronize & the glass will kick back as you described. The motor will have to be removed from the regulator then run the switch to change the motor's position so that tha counter can be brought back into synchronizination.

OF course the door panel must be removed to do this.

Push the first stage button (the first position of the switch - the window moves till you release) and run the window to the top. Then push the button to the second position (the express button) and hold it a couple seconds. Run the window down with the first switch and hold again the second switch for a couple seconds. Now turn off the ignition. Turn the ignition back on and see if it works. If it don't try again.

Right on!

Steve, that's the same procedure I used to 're-sync' my windows. I worked like a charm, the second time!

This has happened twice to me in three years. Both times, nothing was out of the ordinary, the windows just lost their 'brains'!

The express feature doesn't work on all the windows in the W140. Would this be something electrical or simple? I think the dealership said it needed some chip or something like that, I can't remember.

Snowman:
Run the window all the way down and all the way up, but don't use the express up or down, just push on it lightly, just that first resistance you feel in the switch. All the way down, then all the way up, and hold the switch when it gets back to the top. The 140's use this different procedure than the newer cars where you can just close it and hold the switch down a few seconds, the 140 needs to go to the open (window down) position also, not just up.

If it refuses to resynchronize in this manner, you can try disconnecting the battery and resynchronizing (all 4 windows)again from the beginning.

Why am I confused???

This post started with Mark (quist100) having the problem with his windows.

Donnie and Steve answered his question. Then I jumped in. All of this to help Mark.

Then Snowman replies with another "suggestion" that came from the dealership. But he didn't say he was having a problem.

But in his next post, he demands an answer! Gilly comes in with a suggestion whose intent is the same as Steve's (which works just fine).

Two questions:
1) Doesn't anybody read previous answers in the same thread?
2) What happened to Mark?

No my first post was merely as a side tracking question. I figured as long as people were on the subject on windows in the w140, they could help me with my problem. Now I thought that my problem was different from Mark's because ALL of the windows weren't working with the express feature. Sorry to get the thread slightly OT but I figurered it was very similar.

I'm not trying to 'pick' on you. .

so please accept my apology if it seemed that way.

But using rules of our language, no one would know that you had a problem other than by quessing. The operative word is my as in " . . express feature doesn't work on all the windows in my W140". Using the word 'the' changes it to fact or comment about W140s!

Hey, don't blame me, it's how we communicate or don't as the case may be!

But the solutions suggested will work.

And what happend to Mark?

S-500 window problems

Hi Guys,

Mark has been out of town for two weeks. I just got back. As I read these responses, I see there may be a diff. way to calibrate the window for auto up/down.

The last advise I got was to have the shop remove the motor and spin it a few turns to change the position of the Hall Effect Sensor. I called the shop and as of yet have not been able to get it in.

I will try the other way of using only the first detent of the switch and let everyone know what happens.

Again thanks to all,
Mark

Sounds good Mark, be sure to start in the up position, then go all the way down and all the way up again, this motor needs to see the full travel, not just the "up" or closed position.

Only problem is that the early express feature doesn't use motors with Hall sensors. it uses load calculators.

Once hall sensor motors were used only one point was necessary to ID. It knew how far it had to go and when it was back.
