Transmission very weak in reverse

Transmission very weak in reverseMy 95 E3 hundred D has a very weak to know rear gear in the transmission, I was wondering if Lucas transmission six additive would help, hurt or do nothing… Is it worth a try?

IMO it is worth a try, it may lessen the symptom and get you a few more miles; but, it will not repair the problem.

Good luck !!!

The reverse clutches are worn out. Common problem. Delaying repair is likely to cause more damage as the piston moves farther than it should trying to compensate. Eventually too far equals more damage than if the original problem was addressed.

thanks all! I think I see a rebuild in the future! In that case, would a little more damage even matter?

in the meantime, I park strategically to minimize need for reversing 😉

for your wallet, yes

if reverse extends too far, the springs on the piston will blow out everywhere. loose parts in a trans doesn't make for a good time. you went from a very easy rebuild, to replacing parts you wouldn't otherwise have to. at that point, you're better off just buying a new transmission entirely.

I just replaced my transmission with a rebuild from Sun Valley, it engages almost immediately now when put in reverse. Before mine went out, most of the time it would take 3 to 5 seconds to engage.

Easy fix. Buy a paper and rubber kit to reseal the thing externally while it is on a bench, last I tore down needed four (4) reverse clutches. Spend the extra for High Energy graphite material here. Most quality frictions are this anyway. Alto, Raybestos, BW, etc.

This pack is right up front behind the pump. Do pump bushing too!

Regarding a rebuild my $.02 is buy a trans on car-part and take your time rebuilding that one. Dump some stop slip in this one and hopefully it holds together long enough you can put your rebuilt one in at your convenience.
