Anyone ever owned a Smart car fortwo?

I received a 2009 Smart fortwo, aka, model 451 with M132 1.0l engine in it. The former owner's son drove it a couple years but neglected it and mooched rides off his girlfriend. The car is in beautiful shape, once it's washed and cleaned out. All black leather and no rips or wear.

After some basic Benz mechanicking, I got the electrical systems working and the engine running very smoothly, despite the exhaust leak.

My one problem is that the car will shift into all gears, but the trans will not engage and locks the vehicle in place.

HOWEVER, if I turn off the key and shift into N, the car rolls without ANY resistance!!!

Some kind of motor or control to shift the trans is not working.

Two OBDII codes are found: P050A and P0301 and P0303. The latter two are cylinder misfire items from, I think, before I added gas and ran the vehicle for ten minutes after checking oil etc.

I have the following questions:

Where can I get a hold of a real good scanner like the MB STAR scanner, which can reset items and update firmware, which I can't afford at $3800 plus a monthly subscription?

How do I reset the transmission?

Where is the trans control that is blocking the engagement of gears?

Pics soon after I get it home and wash it.

All help appreciated.
