Who'se water pump is good to buy?
Hi,
Time to do a water pump on my 1989 560 SEL. Question is who'se pump is good? Mercedes charges over US$400 for one, and there are oh so many cheaper alternatives. Any suggestions? Duralast at Autozone has a limited lifetime warranty and goes for $85.... Thanks! |
hard jobs,I go with oem.try ebay first, lots of good parts, from closed down dealers

Make sure the impellers are cast. The water pumps with punched out impellers are supposed to be not so good.

Pretty sure I have a NOS Mercedes pump for you. Sending you a PM.

Does anyone know who the OEM supplier was?
|
I believe Graf was the OE; however, sometimes the same company does not make it exactly as the version that gets the OEM/MB logo stamp. I've read/heard accounts in the last decade of sometimes Chinese seals going bad in Graf pumps. I'd rather have a little more peace of mind and obtain a new MB version, even if Graf made it.

These folk were OEM for some time. They state "made in Germany" if it still matters. Now whether their aftermarket quality is on par with their OEM quality is another story. |
I can confirm, newer Graf pumps are garbage. I have had two the failed prematurely, one within 50 miles and the other within 5k miles, both had the bearings go. Laso pumps are much better imo.

I have a Laso pump on my 201. Only issue I had was a leak from where the pump meets the block which was after years of service....pump was still good, no leaking from the weep hole. I ended up getting a new Laso anyways and still kept the old one just incase of an emergency.

I fitted a MEYLE Pump /

hbofinger, I recommend buying a reconditioned water pump from your local MB dealer.

Laso it is...
Found a reasonable one on eBay. I am going with Laso. Thanks!
