hacking limp mode

anyway to hack newer cars.that what keeps me from buying one.Check engine was good enough, but having bread to see a stealership would suck

lsmalley 07-02-2019 08:05 PM

Not sure, best to just stay away from them.

Dubyagee 07-02-2019 08:11 PM

Define hack.

oldsinner111 07-03-2019 06:23 AM

lying to computer,with a resistor,or cutting circut

Short answer: no

Limp home is a failsafe, and it kicks in under a wide variety of circumstances. It is there to protect the engine and drivetrain from full failure...you would want to fix the root problem, not try and hack around it while ignoring the actual issue.

Long answer: yes, if you are a software or electrical engineer who has more time than sense, I'm sure you could fab up a sensor spoof or something to tricking an entire canbus system that there is no problem.

check engine light was good, but greed made them use limp mode to make money.I think thats evil of companies. They make enuff profitt with robotics, and cheap overseas labor

Anyone who could do this would already be smart enough to fix the problem ;)

Limp mode(s) are a way to protect the affected system from further damage. Would you want your transmission to attempt to shift into 2nd gear and 5th gear at the same time?

Other systems use similar protective logic. Traction control, cabriolet roof systems, and pneumatic locking are just a few examples of systems that will block function under certain circumstances.

Some of us old-timers find it hard to accept but it really is to our advantage that these systems exist.

so buy a 48 willys. limp home is there for many reasons, ie you don't have to walk when it quits.

I think the issues with modern vehicles are overrated in severity....overall new cars are just as reliable if not more so. Diagnostics is much easier with a laptop than with poking around the car throwing parts at things.

Dubyagee 07-03-2019 10:04 PM

Warranty and lawyers.

I keed

You can bypass anything. But whatever it was trying to protect will die in short order.

Yep, there are rooms full of workers specifically targeting you, it is even a line item in the budget and share holders vote every year to increase the budget to keep you beaten down.

In fact, the budget might be cut next year because apparently they no longer need to beat you down as you have convinced yourself that the world is out to get you. ( and that it is flat / we didn't land on the moon. )

As others have stated, limp exists to prevent further damage. It also exists in an effort to keep the car moving so it can be safely moved off the road. Would you rather have a car that just shuts off when there is a problem like an older car or one that makes every attempt to keep going?

There are GM engines that shut off cylinders when the car is overheating in attempt to keep the car moving. This works because air is pumped through the cylinder when it isn't firing cooling it, then another cylinder is shut off and the cooled out turned back on.

Do you really want to disable this feature?

You do realize that fuel trims are a sort of limp that continues to adjust fuel mixtures as components age, this is something that a carb car won't do. Well unless you consider a sinking float making the mixture super rich a fuel trim.

Modern cars are far more reliable than in years past. Yes, there are more things that can go wrong but for the most part they keep going.

In the 1950's 60,000 miles was considered end of useful life, now a car with 200,000 is still considered to have useful life left.

I guess the older one gets,he begins to see man's parasitic ways,he feeds of others of his kind.
I would rather be a hunter gatherier 25,000 years ago.
