Engine makes a weird noise when cold

i have a '95 e320. When my car is cold or sitting for a while(overnight) and I start in the morning, it makes a weird belt type of noise for about 15 seconds, then slowly goes away. If you start the car and pop the hood to listen where it comes from, it's one of those weird noises where it seems to come from everywhere. Drive belt has been replaced recently, so it wasn't it.

Any clues where or what could cause this weird noise? It sounds almost like a grinding sound, it's totally bizarre. I just wanted to know if anyone would have even the foggiest clue before I take to the dealership.

thanks

possible its- - air injection pump gets noisy at about 80k to 100k- it's only working for the first ~15 secs when started cold (ie overnight)

if you decide to r/r, its very expensive- - some just live with the noise until complete failure (which may be years away), Starmark warranty may cover it>

hope this helps

if its a clicking, its possibly justa sticking lifter. They are hydraulic. Mine does that on cold starts for a few seconds until oil pressure comes up.

I hear the same thing at the same time on my E320 and have replaced all the rotating hardware on the front of the engine except the air pump, a/c compressor and power steering pump. Using the automotive stetheoscope I can't ascertain where it is originating. I have read another post that even contributed it to the noise from the oil pump so I don't worry too much about it.

Yeah, it's not a ticking sound, defintely sounds like the same thing engatwork has. Mine has 130K miles and did it when I bought it at 112K. It's just weird that I've never seen this problem before and it sucks to start my car in front of someone and they hear it the loud noise. I would like to get rid of it someday

It could be the timing chain making that noise, until the tensioner, which uses oil pressure to work is giving the proper amount of tension to the chain. I mean that until oil pressure is all the way up, at least at the tensioner, the timing chain is slapping a bit.
