do mercedes take special windshields? 500E?

Ok, so my cousin bangs on my windshield to kill a hornet and completely cracks the windshield sending out about foot long spider cracks. Called the mercedes dealership, they said that they need to put the windshield in and get a special windshield.
Are they just trying to make a buck or two, or do mercedes really take special windshields? It's for my 500E. Because if they do take special windshields my car is out of commision for 4 days until they can do it, if not i can just take it to a regular windshield place today. Let me know, thanks guys.

I have personally had excellent results with aftermarket windshields.

I have heard complaints about inferior 'optical quality' from certain producers, but have never actually observed this problem.

Look for small print in the corners to see if you can determine the manufacturer.

Unless it was 'rebadged' with a MB logo, you may be able to request exactly the same OEM part from a glass installer.

It may not come with Daimler's signature on it, but you may save big $$$.

No. All W124's share the same windshield except maybe the convertible and coupe.

My 300TE and 500E share the same MB PN#124.670.33.01

Ask the dealer who they outsource the installation of windshields to. Call them up yourself. You should ask the dealer who they take their body work to. Ask this body shop, who does their Mercedes windshield installation.

Ask the potential installer(s) if they use the required clips (use NEW ones, pn# 124.988.98.78) and adhesive; and ask them how long before you can drive your car.

If they say "what clips" and/or say anything less than waiting 10-12 hrs (24 hrs is best), they are most likely NOT the most experienced Mercedes glass installer.

Ask another dealer parts guy for a reference as well.

Your windshield is an integral part of the rigidity of the roof, and if not properly installed and/or given time to dry, you will hear wind noise and/or have water leaks.

I like Sekurit and Siglia which are OEMs for MB.

If your friend's or your insurance company is paying for it insist on GERMAN glass which has less optical distortion and better fit than aftermarket glass (except perhaps PPG).

I had mine replaced with a PPG aftermarket unit and have had no problems with it. MUCH less expensive than "official" MB, despite the fact that PPG is an OE manufacturer, I'm told.

I did just what Neil said to do -- called the dealer and asked who they used, then called this installer myself. He came and did it in my driveway, which is handy so you can leave it alone for the requisite 24 hours.

My mech is havign a guy come to his shop monday to do mine. $365 installed for OEM glass, not aftermarket, but OEM. It just doesn't have an MB star on it. no biggie.

My cost may sound high or low, I don't know, but I expected to pay $600, so to me its low. If it is high, thats ok, I trust the guy my mech will have do it, because my mech uses him for other mbs he fixes too. price seems good to me, and car should be done in a couple of hours on monday.

Its unfortunate it happened as its going to be seen by a few members who are coming out for the euro light install meet at my house tomorrow.

Alon- just because it's done in a couple of hours, please don't drive her until 8-10 have passed.

If you can work it out, have it sit 24-hours. The flexing from just normal driving just isn't good for the integrity during the first 24-hours.

I, too, had OEM glass from Sekurit installed, also about $350, and it sat for 48+ hours.

yeah I will be dropping it off at my mech and picking it up on weds. I'm going to have him check out my starting issues, because lately its getting harder and harder to start. I am running some techron through right now per my mechs instructions, using a bottle of techron to 1/4 tank of chevron supreme. :) he says to do it this way to get maximum cleaning. I plan on using another bottle too afterwards. He says also to drive to near empty when doing this.

He will be checking out my fuel pump check valve and my pumps to make sure they are ok, and my cold start injector or valve or whatever it is, to see if it has a leak or something causing the car to be hard to start.

It seems to me like the fuel pumps are getting tired, because it doesn't seem like its getting fuel right away when you atrt it.

Anyway, I will be leaving the car at his shop when I get it done because Of the waiting period. No biggie, I can drive my brothers car if I need to, or my dad's range rover if I really need it.

perfect solution

I tell you what, my 93 300E 2.8 has a perfect windshield, and I would be perfectly willing to swap windshields.... if we can also swap engines. I will even drive out there ;P

haha, i'll stick with my engine ;)

Ok so i got two prices. One is $230 and they come out and replace the windshield, i didn't talk to them, my mom did, i will ask about clips and everything today. The other is $250 and the glass is PPG. They come out also.

400E 06-15-2002 11:15 AM

I have heard negative things about Safelite glass -- don't remember the specifics -- so if the low quote is Safelite and the higher quote is PPG, go for the PPG.

hedpe 06-15-2002 12:19 PM

I'm definately going for the PPG, i'm about to call the dealer and see what their quote is.

hedpe 06-15-2002 12:24 PM

just called the dealership
$150 for installation
$334 for ppg glass

ke6dcj 06-15-2002 02:58 PM

I think that's too high for PPG glass.

Again, just last year I paid about $360 for Sekurit (more expensive than PPG). So call the person who installs the windshields for the dealership and work with them directly.

when i was getting my car completely custom painted I took out all my windows. i kinda broke the front windshild. I replaced it with an aftermarket one....no problems yet.....knock on wood:D

amg280 06-15-2002 05:24 PM

I replaced my 420 windshield with a PPG one. Excellent quality. Would recommend them. My mothers C280 also had a windshield replaced with a PPG unit. Again, no complaints there.
