W124, does your headlight switch light up?

Hey guys, I just happened to notice that on my W124 when i turn my headlights on, that switch does not light up, as in the selections do not light up. For some reason I remember them lighting up so if you turned it one way or another a bulb would light up to help you choose what to turn on. Did my bulb burn out? Or was this a figment of my imagination that it lit up at one time?

No, you're not losing it. It is lit. Mercedes did make a rather unusual ergonomic gaffe, though. The headlight switch only lights up when the headlights are on. So if it's dark out and you need to find the switch... On the 210 the headlight switch is lit whenever the ignition is on - easy to find in the dark.

The symbols around the switch should light up, and the center dot should lite when you turn on the rear fog light (switch pulled all the way out - 2 clicks out). If you don't have the rear fog light installed, there may not be a bulb for the orange dot. If the symbols around the switch are not lighting, then the bulb is bad, or a fuse is toast.

Bulb changing for this switch is in the archives - I don't remeber all the details, but I believe it involves pulling off the switch knob, removing the locking nut around the switch shaft, and sliding the panel to the left to release the hooks holding the right side of the panel in place. You should see the bulb housing behiond the switch area.
