1984 190e Tranny ???
I am wondering what the gear shifts in the automatic transmission should feel like. right not it is quite disconcercing at each shift, on acceleration the car feels as though it is being kicked and there 2 jerks in the cars movement, almost as though there is play in the drive shaft between the trnny and diff.and whn the tranny shifts it falls behind the roataing speed of the diff. The car has 94600 miles on it and from looking through the maintaince records for the car I do not know when the fluid and filter for the tranny were last changed. could changine the transnssion fluid and filter be causing these hards shifts? and would changint teh stuff possibly remedy the problems? could this poor shifting be a symptom of a serious tranny problem that is just waiting for the absolute worst time to show itself?
Thanks for any and all help on this.

Hi Pioltx:
You are right in thinking that a simple fluid and filter change will help the hard shifts. When I had problems with my transmission, I experienced "slipping" -- when I would accelerate, the transmission would not "catch" and I would have to manually put it into 1st gear in order to get it to engage. I would have the fluid and filter changed first. It's not too expensive -- around $130. The tech that does it will drop the transmission pan, and that's usually where clutch material collects, signaling a major transmission. From the sounds of it though, you probably just need a filter and fluid change. Best of luck to you and have a good week! -Michael. |

I have had similar problems with my tranny as well. As one of the moderators stated "time and mileage are catching up with your transmission".
I pulled the tranny out to change the front and rear seals, tranny pan gasket and filter. I also changed the tranny throttle cable (as I broke the clip removing it). I also renewed the flex plates and center bearing supports on the drive shaft to take up the slop. These tasks arent too difficult, but do require some ambition. And stamina. These measures gave my tranny some more life. While it doesnt feel 'new' its still chuggin' along.

I changed the tranny filter and fluid and found it had tunred to a burnt brownish red color. It wasnt too hard to do my self, only took 3 tools, 13mm socket, metric allem wrench and a phillips screwdriver. the fluid change has made the tranny a lot smoother shifting wise. On a good note finally with this car the bottom of the tranny pan was practically imaculate there was onlt a very light thin film of some sort of black stuff and absolutely no metal what so ever the black stuff came off with no effort infact just a light finger touch removed it. I still have a clunk after the shift but its not from the tranny so im gonna be changing the diff oil/lube soon. Any info on what i should replace it with would be great. I did have one little problem with te fluid change but it was my fault, I overfilled the tranny and had to remove about a quart thru the dipstick tube. not owning a topsider made this quite tedious. After having to take out the fluid the hard way, with a bulb pump, im gonna be making my own version of a topsider. If it works out well Ill pass around my plans for it here for anyone interested.
Thanks for all the help Jason
