W124 1995 E320 Wagon Mysterious Switch

1 Attachment(s)
I was installing a headlight switch last night and all went very well.

But.....as I was looking under the dash i noticed a knob that i have never seen before. It is only accessible when the the lower bolster is loosened as i did to remove the headlight switch. The previous owner of the car did some weird things so i am not sure if this is an original feature. (he removed the kick down switch,????Why would anyone do that?)

Any help in figuring this out would be appreciated. I didn't touch it, but i might to see if it does anything

Thanks

That appears to be a cruise control amplifier. The knob is a lock/unlock.

Diagnostic module. The knob is to engage / release it from the connector.

I am interested on the purpose for an inaccessible switch. When is it used? Why isn't it readily accessible?

It isn't a switch. It's a latch. Turning it one way releases the module and pushes it out of its socket, turning it the other way pulls it into the socket and latches it in place.

FWIW, the DM's only function is to monitor smog-related stuff and turn on the CEL if there's a problem.....

Too funny, a couple nights ago I also replaced the headlight switch in my new-to-me '94 E320 TE, and saw and wondered about the same switch.
