300D seat spring/horsehair change out?
 

How do I access the middle screw on the seat spring support frame to separate it from the spring/bottom seat assy?

On a 126 seat you have to move the forward/backwards adjustment in order to line up the access hole for that center screw! If there is no hole I suppose one could be drilled to gain access.

I got it. Found out I ain't got no horsehair. I have some type of foam looking pad and it seems that what is worn out in my seat is the "padding" that is sewn into the seat cover. I have attached a photo. Does this mean I have leather?
Changing the spring assy helped alot.

That yellow part on the bottom is the foam pad.

Interesting. I'm looking at doing a horsehair and spring assembly changeout on my '82 300D. Mostly its the spring assembly that leans to the outside - I presume due to "large man" syndrome, dropping on that side of the seat from some height to manage entry to the vehicle. :)

It's had the "large man" treatment enough to have popped a hole in the seat cover where the adjustment handle got crunched against the seat!

I doubt my ability to simply disassemble the seat and bend the springs somehow to get them "strong" again - so new items are probably in order.

How about a picture of the top of the seat cover so we can take a guess if its leather or MB-Tex?

Your seat looks like the way my '87 300D feels after riding in the '82 - like it doesn't have any padding left, and its leather in the '87.

Ken, I've got the horsehair padding that I can sell you. If you are interested email me. I will get a pic of the other side of the seat bottom this evening. It sits ALOT better with the new spring assy.

The new spring has been redesigned with coils at the front corners. The original spring only used flat springs.

The linen backing for most of those seats usually looks like Jim's when disassembled. We always have an upholserer sew new linene on with the seams running in between the linear stuffing strips. This is the way leather seats were constructed, but they may have done some "Tex" seats that way.

I have never seen molded foam cushions on those seats although leather did have 3/4 inch thick slabs of foam attached to the outer sides of the synthetic horse hair. The construction and retention system of these seats requires a minimum of stiffness of the cushion to hold the seat together. I have seen hundreds of seats with the bottom cardboard retaining pleat unraveled and loose due to this problem.

That yellow foam material actually has "grooves" for the spring attachment to slide into so I am assuming it is original.

I doubt it.
