Price of a cam

Can someone please tell the price of a cam for a 86 300E. From fastlane I'm gathering that I will have to change the rockers cam gear adaptor bolt, etc.

So what I'm looking at (IF my cam is worn is a minimum of $700-)just to change the DAMN CAM!!!

Or am I reading something wrong. OH PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE..

ANyone care to tell me the signs of a worn cam..

Why do you need a cam? Cams almost never wear out on benzes. Not even the crappy 3.8 with one timing chain. Unless you didnt keep it full with oil. =)

Whats the problem?

On the early 560s, (117.968) the cams were made of a softer alloy and the lobes tended to wear prematurely. I think this was remedied in the late '80s.

Anyhow... a constant clacking can be indicitive of cam wear or rocker arms problems. You'll have to inspect the cams to get a better idea, or perhaps you can use a piece of hose (like a stethoscope) and try to islolate any noise -- that is if there is any(?)

I'm dealing with this problem right now and hoping it's the rockers, but my brake job takes precedent at this point. :)

I've also been told by my mechanic that the right cam on the 4.5 liter V8's is also prone to cam lobe wear.

might have over reacted

I might have jumped the gun on the cam issue. The problem was, I just did the head over guides, seals, gasket, etc. I noticed after a few days there was a tapping noise and a really rough idle. Everything was torqued to specs but still I had this TAP TAP TAP. I remembered that I pulled the resistor(this does retard the timing right?), well I put it back in lastnight and this morning after driving for a bit no more tap. I don't want to jinx myself so I'm going to wait a few days of driving to see if the tapping is gone or not. I did pull the resistor as soon as I finished the head work. I don't know if this has any bearing but, the car's idle is a whole hell of alot smoother and no more tapping. I'll let you know where I stand in a few days.
