1987 300E Engine periodically will not start

This message is for Donnie:

We have a 1987 300E. The car seems to run OK most of the time, but occasionally it won't start again after being idle for several hours. This has happened twice within the last two weeks. The last time was last night. The car had to be towed home - where it sits now.

When trying to start the car this morning, it seemed like it was trying to start, but wouldn't. I thought it might be a clogged fuel line filter or fuel pump that is causing the problem. The car has about a half tank of gasoline in it at the moment. Any suggestions?

Mine had a similar problem and it was the fuel pressure relief valve.

It seems you're suggesting that your problem is fuel related, so the items to check would be: fuel filter, fuel pumps, fuel pressure regulator, etc.

I suppose without taking it to a mechanic and confirming that your problem is fuel supply related or possibly something else, the cheapest thing to replace would be the fuel filter.

I've replaced the fuel pressure regulator myself and it wasn't very expensive and is easy for DIY'er to replace.

Fuel pump relay (located behind the battery against the firewall on the passenger's side)? Just a thought. My 300E would start, sometimes stall, wouldn't start, etc., until I changed that little guy.

You might try reading this post and see how it applies to your problem:

The pump relay is always a suspect...

Also: Try whacking the fuel pump (well not too hard...) with something med heavy, but blunt (like the handle end of a big screwdriver). You may be amazed, and have isolated the problem all at once!

Fuel Pump and Pump Relay Location

To: Mr. C Snow:

Thanks for the suggestios, but my son cannot locate his manual for the 300E. I could trace the location of the fuel pump, but it would help if you can tell me where the fuel pump is physically located on the car.

I had an interesting development yesterday - my son managed to start the car and had it adling pretty fast to keep it running. He called me because there was lots of smoke coming out of the engine compartment while the car was running. I tried to locate the source of the smoke and it seemed to be coming from a canister (looked like an oil filter) located next to the accelerator linkage just to the right of the air filter on the drivers side. I told him to turn the car off until I could find the source of the smoke. Subsequent attempts to start the car later produced nothing. The car always tried to start before this incident and conked out. After the smoke cleared, the car would not attempt to start at all. I looked underneath the car when it was smoking and after the car was turned off and there was nothing on the ground. I am puzzled as to what was smoking. What do you think is going on?

I ordered a new fuel filter and plan to install it today. After I do that, I will check all connections and then attempt to start the car.

Your comments please.

Marvin,

I can't explain the smoke.
I can help you with the rest.
IMHO the manuals are truly useless for locating or dealing with relay problems.
See this page for useful information on the relay end of things:
http://ow.no/mb/w124/tech/engine%20and%20transmission/fuelpumprelay.html

The fuel pump/filter/pressure regulator assembly is located under the car, on the right side, just ahead of the rear axle. You will have to remove a plastic shield to get at it.
Some models have 2 fuel pumps, but I think yours has just one.
Looking at the attached diagram, the pump is on the left, the filter is in the middle, and the pressure regulator is on the right.

The hardest part of servicing anything in this assembly is that you need to drain the fuel tank, or plug the hose, and even then there will be much residual fuel to contend with, which is no fun, particularly without a lift.

I still think it may be worth trying a whack on the pump, and replacing the relay before tearing into this assembly. Good luck, and I hope it is an easy fix.

My fuel pump relay (on the 190E) gave me the exact same problems. I could hear it clicking when ignition was switched on, but sometimes the fuel pump would not run with it. After finding out a replacement was £75, I opened it up, found a broken joint meaning the relay could switch, but the voltage would not travel out to the pump, and resoldered it. Works perfectly now for last 6 months.

Try listening for the fuel pump when you switch the ignition on, should whirr for a second or so.

correct fuel pump relay

Message is for CSnow:

I managed to find a fuel pump relay for my 1987 300D with the following part number as specified in W124 tech tips:

002 545 27 05 ( a Mercedes part number with 9 pins).

I removed the fuel pump relay from the car to replace it and found a different part number in there. It was:

003 545 2405 ( a mercedes part number with 10 pins). I compared the two parts and found that there is an extra terminal on this part and it is labeled 87H. I compared the electrical diagram from the W124 Tech Tips and there is no function identified for pin 87H. I talked to Phil at your parts shop and he matched up the 003 545 2405 with my VIN and says that is the part Mercedes recommends for my car.

Now the question for you is will the 002 545 27 05 work in my car without causing a problem? It looks like it should, and the only difference is the addition of pin 87H - again, what function does it perform?

002 545 27 05 is certainly the listed part number for W124 with m103 engine from my perspective.

You didn't really mean "1987 300D", did you? I was presuming 300E in all of my comments.

I found 003 545 2405 listed as a "fuel shutoff relay".
This does not mean it would not work, however.
Perhaps a newer listing.
Apparently, it was working for you, at least to some extent...

Correction

To C Snow:

Thanks for your prompt reply. I must apologize for stating 300D, I meant the 1987 300E. Is there any reason why I cannot replace the 003 545 2405 fuel pump relay with the 002 545 27 05 fuel pump relay even though there is only a slight difference (pin 87H added) between them?

Is it possible that the 002 545 27 05 was used with the 1986 300E and the 003 545 2405 was a modification for 1987 300E models that will work minus some added feature?

regards,

Marvin Smith

csnow,

Just to clarify, in your picture, it is NOT the pressure regulator is the fuel accumulator on the right.
Peace!
