I really do not think this relay changed design for 1987.

My best guess is that it changed to 10 pins to support some later application, and they have gone to producing just one relay that supports both the old and the new. You just happen to have a newer one installed.

One of my favorite vendors has pictures of just the pin side (so I can't see the part numbers), but the Rebuilt relays listed for the 1987 model have 9 pins, and the New relays have 10 pins.

I do not know what 87H does, but I bet you do not need it.

Exclamation

Marvin,
I looked into this a bit more, and now I'm confused as well.

Some vendors have a single listing for the relay for 1987, while others have a 'split listing' for that model year.

This is the split breakpoint:
A-396764 or lower
A-396765 or higher

What is your VIN?

In the meantime, I'll see if I can sort this out.
Sorry if I misled you...

Fuel Pump Relay

Mr. CSnow et al:

Thanks for your help on everything. After going through this, I finally reasoned that the rebuilt relay that was listed had 9 pinouts while the new one had 10 - which indicated that the extra pin was a diagnstic function and would not change the operation significantly. I interchanged the relays without incident and the result was the same - the relay could be heard clicking and the fuel pump would run when the ignition was turned "on". The car tried to start when the 10 pin relay was removed and the 9 pin relay was installed. However, it sounded like there was water in the fuel line and the engine quickly sputtered to a halt.

I had the car towed to the shop this morning and will have the fuel filter changed and any other problems will be identified. I would still like to know what function the extra pin (87H) provides if you find out.

regards,

Marvin Smith
