Hello:

I own a 1986 420SEL and I am considering changing the rear seal on the engine myself. I have access to a fully operational lift and garage with all the parts and tools I need.

All I need to know from someone is: Is this a job that my son and I can accomplish in a reasonable amount of time?

Will I run into any special tool requirements during the job?

While I have the transmission off, is there anything I need to replace while I have the tranny off?

Is this a job I should try to do myself or do I absolutely need to spend all that money at the Mercedes Dealer?

Any help is appreciated!

Bill

This is a high level repair even for experienced techs. You might be capable of it though you will have to be the judge of that. If it is money that you are trying to save, I think that paying someone to do it is better. I actually paid a Nissan Tech to install the rear main seal in my 1993 Pathfinder 4WD. I am a Master Tech with all of the tools and then some, but he does this repair all day long and will know some things I will not about the product...Just think if you replace the seal and it still leaks because the bolts are slightly streched or the flex plates are very slightly misaligned...It has happened to the best techs there are. I would get someone to do it!
