ignition switch problem

our newly acquired 190e wont start!!! when i jump the starter solenoid to the battery with the ignition switch on the engine starts right up. i just cant do this with the key... seems as if the problem must be in the start switch, trans interlock switch or wire harness. surely there are some points to test these switches. your help greatly appreciated. my wife loves driving this car after driving a ford f150 for the last 17 years, so she wants this "new to her " car fixed.

When you turn the key to the start position, does the key stay there or spring back?? Many times the steering lock will crack(aluminum) where it engages the ignition switch.

no, there does not seem to be any spring at the end of the key stroke (start position). the car is new to us, but it seems that it used to be: turn key to right, it would crank, then i would have to turn key back to left (all the way) before trying to re start. this seems to be gone but then the starter isnt doing any thing by way of the key. can i check continuity on trans safety switch? which part keeps one from "double starting"? is this a mechanical or electrial?
