Sudden loss of transmission fwd and rev 95 E320

Went to do a favor for my BIL today, drove him to Home Depot to buy a new sink, something that fit my E320 wagon quite well.
I've driven several hundred miles a week before with no problem, the car has about 150K miles and it needed a head gasket around 18 months back. par for the course on the M104 engine.

OK, parked, went in and fifteen mins late came out, started the engine and put in reveres, it wasn't like it was on a slight incline but it seemed to simply roll back slowly.
I pulled the gearshift to Fwd and same thing, it was like I could have walked faster, a real snails pace so I headed across the parking lot maybe 150 feet ad straight into a empty slot, telling my passenger this was something really bad!
I called for a tow and fortunately AAA was nearby, the tow driver slid in and raised the rear wheels and carried it off to a good mechanic nearby.
and of course the new policy prevents tow drivers from carrying any passengers, so I had to get a friend to come pick us and the sink up!

In the short time I was waiting for the tow I walked back to where it was initially parked to look for any sign of trans fluid on the pavement seeing nothing I went back and tried to pull the Trans dipstick only to have the lever on it break off in the process grrr ! now where am I going to find one of those?
Mechanic called said fluid was full and is nice and red (was changed less than 18 months ago).
Anyone with experience in this kind of failure?
I am imagining a simple thing like the internal pump disengaged for some reason?

Hi DDH, have you found the transmission problem?
