AC Diagnostic Scanner for 2003 W211 E-320

Is it possible to do my own diagnostics before taking the car to the dealer/shop? The car has a clutch-less compressor. What is the model of a good scanner I should be looking for? I have time to learn and diagnose the problem!

Icarsoft i980, Icarsoft MB2, Foxwell NT520. Each one of these have different interfaces and capabilities. NT520 even does limited coding and SBC bleed and reset functions. The foxwell are faster and easier to use with better live data but no coding.
