W124 squeaky door limiter
 

Door creaks when opening. No matter how much wd40 I spray on the limiter it doesn’t quiet down. Is there a way to grease the limiter or do I just need to replace it?

WD is not a lubricant. Don't care what it claims on the can, it is NOT a lubricant.

You can try disassembling the old door check and greasing it inside with silicone grease (silicone grease repels water, will not turn to "glue", and does not attract dirt). If that doesn't sound like something you want to mess with, replace it before it seizes. There is a very strong spring with a couple of balls that drop into detents. It relies on a grease film to slide. Creaking comes from a lack of lubricant and an ingress of debris and rust.

Take it out, clean and lube or replace before it seizes. WD40 isn't up to this task.

The door strap rides on large ball bearings. If it's squeeking, it means that one or more bearings is worn flat. You're going to have to replace the strap. For future reference, it's almost pointless to grease or oil them from outside. The best way to do this is to R&R and grease the bearing surfaces.

I’ll order up a set of uros and see how those go.

Keep in mind the new ones are not painted. They are gold colored I think. But you will only see them when the door is open.

Picked up a set of the uros. Should I pregrease these things or just put them in as is?

I vaguely remember servicing the door check on my car 20 years ago. I removed it and regreased the unit. This couldn't be done in-vehicle. It was tricky to take apart with the spring force.

You can oil these but it will make the noise again in 12 months time .
I use a syringe full of oil and molly slip and a tube on the end push it through the hole the arm comes out off and let the dame thing have it all . If you do replace them get the ones with a plastic cover over the works . Then before fitting fill the cover with grease replace the cover and fit it in place . Do repair it or ,,this noise you hear will damaging the hole the rear of the check strap is held in to the door . This car i have came with both front doors doing this .It was like a gunshot going off .And when i replaced the one the hole was damaged in the door .The hole to fit the rear of the check strap had been damaged by the strap retaining bolt moving inside the hole,, and it was now ellongated . On refiting the new one i used a penny washer to fit the dimple in the door before pushing the bolt through . You can repair these check straps .Rust gets in the bearing serface .You will need a very good vice to compress them but it can be done.

Got the new one in. The old one actually had a good amount of grease in it. Not sure what was causing it to sound like a box of rocks but it’s fixed now

I did not. It’s was about 105 degrees out and if I work in my driveway too long I draw too much tweaker attention. I can take a pic of the new part in the car and the old part in the trash can..

speed good job done . My experience is they dont last long .But you never know ..
