Unhappy 88 190E 8V Intermittent Stalling

I have a 88 190E 2.3 8V that developed an intermittent stalling condition, hot, cold, after two hours of driving or right after you start it, it doesn't make any difference. Once it stalls you wait 2-3 minutes and it starts up and runs normally. Car stalls three or four time a day. Had it into the shop several times and they could not trace the problem. On a hunch, I rigged a test lamp to the fuel pump and found out that every time it stalled the lamp went out so I know the issue is related to fuel pump power. I put a 12v switched line in-line with my test lamp and it continues to run fine. I have a service manual which shows the fuel pump relay in the panel box behind the fuse box but there is no F/P relay in there. I don't want to defeat the relay since the pump would continue to run in the event of an accident with a fuel leak so I need to trace this one down. Has anyone else solved this type of problem before, and where is the F/P relay???? Thanks for any help.

You are not alone -- intermitent stalling is a common problem with these cars. The most common causes seem to be bad fuel pump relays, fuel pumps, overload protection relays, fuel filters, fuel pressure regulators, vacuum systems, etc. ad naseum.

Do a search on "stalling 190E" and you will get a ton of information. Good luck!

Fuel Pump Relay would be my first replacement. My 1984 190E had the exact same symptoms you describe. Seems the factory units are not hermetically sealed and the innerds tend to get moisture in 'em and corrode. The replacement units are sealed (tho' don't know why MBZ doesn't just install these in the first place).

Good luck!

Another possibility -- and I speak from recent experience -- is your electrical system. If your alternator isn't charging your battery properly, or if your battery has trouble holding a charge, your engine could stall intermittently.

This happened to me when I installed my new sound system with three new amplifiers. All it took was a half an hour of listening to the radio without the motor running to partially drain the battery. Although the battery still had enough juice to start the motor, the stock alternator with its 55 amps couldn't produce enough juice to charge the battery while the stero system was on, and the car stopped dead in its tracks until the battery could recuperate or be jumped.

Upgrading to specially modified 100 amp alternator and fully recharging the battery solved my stalling problem.

I have the same problem years ago on my 85 190E. The culprit was the fuel governor located below the Air filter element casing. It is made of sealed molded plastic (gray) has 2 screw holding, with 2 small o-rings and has black and grey wire connection. Good luck...

Does your rpm gauge drop when the fuel pump goes out?

I got a similar problem with only stallings now and then. I did replace the ovp because I had the older one with only one fuse on top and it was made in 1987. I read somewhere one the forum these can cause trouble...

The stallings did occur in about half a year until a week ago when I went on a trip. After driving for some hours following things happend: the rpm gauge droped to zero and engine died/missed. Then it continue running as nothing happened. This can happen at any rpm but yet it not at idle...

I want to locate this problem and been reading forums. Could clogged injector cause this?
