85 300D How Do I GRACEFULLY replace the Ignition Lock--specifically, the Black piece

I am replacing my ignition lock. I understand the part about the pperclip. The round Black piece around the lock has me stumped; I think it turns off. Before getting large pliers and possibly marring it, I am wondering if there is a more graceful way..

Once you find the right "spot" it turns off quite easily. You may have to initiate it with the channel lock pliers. It is more a matter of lining up the release properly versus the black ring to be real "tight".
