lost all gears 2001 W210 E280-4matic
Last week I lost all gears.
The car drove well all day, but when I tried to pull away at a traffic light it shook and accelerated badly. After the second traffic light, all managed to drive away by switching off the engine and starting it again, after that all gears were gone. Now it stuck in Neutral The errors were: 1- P2502 The gear in implausible or the transmission is slipping 2- P220A The speed comparison of Y3/6n2 to Y2/5y3 is implausible Later I checked with DAS with the following results. Sometimes the N3 value changes (Lower or 0). The voltage (pin 38 on control module) to the valves is 3 Volt. Rob |

Try to get under car and remove the harness connector bushing. If it is full of tranny fluid then go to transmission control module under hood, disconnect and try to clean it up.
Is there any service records for transmission? How many kilometers are on it?

Not very much km:180k
4 years ago the TCM was full of tranny fluid. Replaced the bushing and cleaned the TCM. At the moment it is still dry. Apart from that just fluid and filter changes. Tranny never slipped before. Rob Last edited by Rob Pruijt; 08-26-2020 at 05:28 PM. |

are you seeing the digital readout for the gear position on the gauges? - or is it blank?
If its blanked out - the TCU can hang and not apply any gear. How come your output speed is registering on a stopped car?

My tranny did that on my 300e diesel and the transmission was toast

N2 and N3 are both input speed sensors, N2 reads the speed of the front sun gear and N3 of the front planetary carrier. Rob |

The transmission line to the cooler became pinched or crimped somehow and restricted the transmission oil till it literally fried everything. It was running good then within 15 minutes went from making noise to a clunk to flatline. New transmission

My transmission did not overheat, it just stopped working.

Before you condemn the transmission, check all four CV axles. If one goes out you would lose all drive. I would expect it to have made some noise before it went out, but jack up the wheels one at a time and try to turn them while in park. They shouldn't turn far.

It still should shift to first gear without axles. |

Today I removed the pan:
The fluid is a bit brown and there are particles in it. Some are shiny aluminium (not magnetic) and look like bronze colored (not sure). According to WIS the centre bearing is a needle not the early bronze type. |

did it try to apply 2nd gear when you moved the mode switch from summer to winter?

I took the transmission apart.
The B2 clutch/brake was destroyed, three friction plates lost all friction material and the metal plates were worn. Everything else looks ok Rob |
