300E Automatic transmission fluid level
I found my automatic transmission fluid level being too high, might be filling too much fluid in while service.
Could any one kindly tell me how to check the fluid level of the automatic transmission gearbox of a 1992, 300E? what is the level difference between cold and hot fluid? What happen if it's over-filled? Thanks. |

you have to measure it hot, when you have been driving around for a good 20 minutes at least. the difference between hot and cold measurements is about a third of a quart. do a search on overfilling transmission fluid - to make a long story short, just siphon off the excess, and make sure that you don't contaminate the fluid...

jsmith is correct. Also cycle through each selector position (P, R, N, D, 3, 2) stopping in each momentarily prior to checking it. I always checked mine hot AND idling, in Park on level ground with a clean lint-free rag.

According to the service CD, the fluid level when cold should be 10 mm below the lower mark on the dipstick. At operating temperarure it should be no higher than the top mark. It's better to run a little low that too full.

i have found a huge difference between hot and cold measurements, specially with the synthetic mix i am using. i measured it at just below the max point after driving around for a half hour. then i measured it after a long highway trip and it was over the max by about a third of a quart. i left it alone because in normal driving it is below the max...
