Throttle Linkage Lubrication
 

My 560 SEL just turned 100k on a trip we did this weekend. Everything works great, but the cruise control seems to occasionally disengage, though it reengages on pulling the switch to resume. I have already wanted to lubricate the throttle linkage before the trip, but could not find the "Aero" hydraulic fluids specified in the manual, not even at my local airport!

I have seen other people mention ATF as a lubricant for their throttle linkage, but on was other models. Does anybody know if this is ok on the 560?

I use a substance called polylube or white lithium grease. As for your cruise the amplifier is probably bad, do a search and find a good source for a reman unit.:D

Tire Size/Balance
 

As for the cruise control disengaging, make sure your tire pressure is up, tread ware is about the same on all the tires and the balance is correct. Having a tire or a set that is different then the others will make the computer think that one or some of the tires are turning faster/slower then the others and disengage the cruise. Just follows my theory, check the simple things first before replacing parts!

Never heard of a tire causing a sruise problem, we had abs problems on late models from low profiles that were differant sizes. Tire pressure will not affect cruise on the 124 bodies.

It's a 126 body. But it can't be the tires - just had all that checked out.

Again - I wonder about what would be a proper lubricant for the linkage. Is ATF ok?

I've used ATF and grease just to see the characteristics of each. The ATF works better.

Once I know that linkage is as smooth as it should be, then I will test the cruise again. If that did not help, then I'll start checking out the amplifyer and go through the diagnostics.

On the rear light bulb issue with the cruise control - that should only affect the cruise with lights on, or with the brake pedal depressed, right? After all, with the lights off, the circuit for the bulbs is open.

It is the brake light bulbs that effect the cc so it should not matter whether the lights are on or off. In one of these cc threads there is discussion on where to send the amp/actuator for rebuild.

Could someone describe how they lubricate the linkage with the ATF? Do you just place a few drops on it or ???

M/B sells the hydraulic fluid at the dealers. It is the same fluid used in the self-leveling system. It makes a great lube for the newer door hinges also (the ones without the grease port). It is best applied with a "needle nose" applicator so you can control the flow to a drop or so.

Henry - Looking for a real good lubricant oil? For years now I put Duralube in a small container and use that. When you think of it - if it cuts down friction in your engine with a light coating - think what it can do for other things requiring lubrication.:D :D :D
