W124 dot 3 vs dot 4 fluid change
I’m replacing a caliper on my 124. I have a **** ton of dot 3 in the garage. Would bleeding through lines with dot 3 be a bad idea? From what I understand there’s no difference in the dot 3/4 except the boiling temps which are pretty close. I only use this car as work commuter. I just wanna use up the fluid I already have.

Very little difference between the two. Mixing them is fine.
Mixing either of them with DOT5 is the big no-no! |
sealed bottles? any open bottles can attract moisture which defeats the purpose. that's why they insist on sealed containers.
|
Yup everything sealed. How long would it take to bleed the system with a power bleeder?
|
Try to use the correct spec as it is brakes. If the bottles are ANCIENT, sealed or not then I wouldn't use them as brake fluid absorbs water through the sealed containers over years...i.e., it has a shelf life.
How long to pressure bleed??? 30 minutes start to finish. Keep a close eye toward keeping the rear half of the brake fluid reservoir full as it fills slowly and it can be hard to see. Good luck!!! |
Dot 4 is recommended to be used in ABS equipped systems as it improves response/function due to lower viscosity.

Hey when I took the brake line off the caliper nothing came out. Bone dry. That means the line is plugged right?
|
I have fluid coming from Front master cylinder Into abs pump. Front Pass side Is circulating but driver side at the pump is dry. Is there a way to fix this without replacing the pump?
|
try tapping the ABS pump with a small hammer to see if it frees up. If it doesnt flow then you need a new ABS pump.

the DOT4 and DOT3 debacle also happens on Honda and mazda forums - while in real world its negligible unless you are tracking the car. |
So I put in a used abs pump, bled lines fresh fluid and oh lord the difference is night and day. I think that caliper might Not have been fully functional for a while.
