I have a 1990 300E with 134,000 Arizona miles on it. The heat has really cracked the wood finish around the shifter and also around the ACC. Is it possible to remove the old plastic finish and re-apply a laquer of some sort? Anyone done this before? Thanks in advance -- Mikey

yes it's been done, but it's a PITA to do and you have to do all of the panels because you'll never match the shading. do a search in detailing.

jsmith is partially right - it is NOT a PITA - it is a REAL PITA!!! -Getting the old finish off is extremely hard and a lot of work. Do a seach of this site - there are guys out there who can give you a professional job reasonably - or search the bone yards for another one. I did the wood on my 560 and it took me a month of evenings and week ends to get it right. The tricky part is not to sand to far as the zebrano wood is very thin and laminated to mahogany underneath - one slip in hand sanding and the mahogany shows through. Don't ask how I know - just believe me when I say REAL PITA.

Hi-power is having one refinished by a piano restoring place I think.

I would checkw ith him, he can probably lead you in thew right direction.
