190e 2.3 chain tensioner stuck in block

Hi All,

I have a 1992 190e 2.3 with the m102 engine with a leaking head gasket. I've torn the motor down to remove the head but I am struggling with the chain tensioner.

-Do I need to fully remove the chain tensioner housing to "reset" the ratcheting mechanism?

-I tried to unscrew the tensioner housing (after removing the spring and cap) with a 17mm allen socket but it is very stuck. I used a big breaker bar and the threads in the tensioner are starting to strip.

Does the tensioner HAVE to fully come out and be reset? Will a torch melt the chain guides inside the motor? Any suggestions?

Please note this tensioner is NOT the same as found on the 6 cylinder 190e 2.6

Please let me know if anyone has does this before.

Thanks,

Nate
