1987 420SEL fuel problem

I have a problem with my 420SEL dying at stop lights or slow turns. Only happens on slight uphill slopes as far as I can tell. Engine runs fine, then it acts like it's being starved of gas when I try to accelerate away. Any ideas on what could be the problem? I plan on getting new fuel pumps

Does this happen regardless of the amount of fuel in the tank or only under certain conditions, like when the fuel tank is low?
