107 450SL cam valve ticking NOT GOOD? Worth fixing or dump car?
Here is the pic of the cam. Looks a little beat up for sure with scoring.
I bought this whip to resell and question is do I fix it car or just part it out? I did get the car cheap so take that into consideration. Would I have to replace the cam or could I just replace the whole spring assemble on that one valve? I don't need it PERFECT to sell just need it running decent. I am not making a concourse car here just a cheap car for someone to have fun in! The plug was perfect so no internal issues going on. Any all advice appreciated since right now I am moving toward parting out the car since the tick is loud and I got a good deal since I told the seller engine was shot Thanks, Brent |

Is the Oiler tube streaming oil on it while it runs?
I think some cardboard to catch the splashing oil might enable you to run the car with the valve cover off. I’ve never done it myself though.

If you have a flat cam lobe, you'll never get rid of the tick unless you replace the camshaft and rocker. I don't think that the cams are that much and the job on the older V8s is a cake walk. |

cam, rocker, possibly lifter-doubt it-, oil tube and valve cover gasket. hardest part is the allen bolts that hold the cam bearings down. i'd do it. good luck, chuck.

Fixed! Tick is gone!
Well I replaced the rocker with the $22 part from ebay
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fits-Mercedes-R107-450SE-450SL-450SLC-500SEC-Engine-Rocker-Arm-Febi-1160551501A/112421711271?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649 and the $60 part from amazon to compress the spring. (really well made part FYI) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007QF84JG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 And this rocker came off easily....almost too easy thought I broke something! Shows a little wear, haha. I can see how the tick happened with that much clearance. I took some 200 then 400, 800 and 1500 grit and smoothed out the cam. The whole problem started due to a blocked oil drain tube above that cam so it wasnt getting oil at idle. Also got those replaced for $10 for both sides and simple fix, just the parts have to be broken off to replace them. I was almost hoping the thing would tick so I could be done with it and just part it out. SURPRISE, no tick at all?? I am thinking of changing all these out on my 560SL after how easy it was and I have the tool. I will change the oil since all kinds of junk got in around the valve covers. Easy fix for a car with 170k mile that has many other issues.... Thanks for all the advice and help! |
