update:

the old rear wind shield glass is installed back in.
I had it dried out the milky spots over the summer (which worked quite well but it takes a long time) and sealed the edges with 3M goop #08693 as good as I could. I hope that the milky fog will not come back but who knows

I tried to install the glass back according to the WIS and it worked quite well. It is not too hard to do but you'll need the helper and know 'string pulling trick'.
Two problems I might still have

1) the upper aluminum frame edge is a bit high on the left side. According to the WIS the frame should be 0-1mm lower than the roof.... whatever that means. You see on the pictures that the left side frame edge is lower (wood stick slope is bigger than on the right side)

2) I should get the MB sealant int the rubber lip between glass and rubber...
do you think this is necessary. I actually could not get the plastic nozzle of the gun in there.

Best, Martin

I finished the construction site. I did a water test and the rear shield is water tight (I managed to put sealant into the outer lip at the glass.)

However if I am pouring a bucket of water then I'll get water into one side of the trunk, not through the window area but through the rubber.

I climbed inside, closed the trunk and saw that the side rubber lip was not as tight as on the other sides.... so I believe that water might find its way in during heavy rain... when there is some ' pressure' in that gutter.

here is the finished car

Martin, do you mean the rubber of the outer edge windshield seal, or the trunk seal (the latter can be a possibility even though it looks ok)?

Hi DrewPT,

yes I meant the trunk seal lip (not the windshield seal). It seemed that the left side trunk seal was not firm against the lid like at the other side and back.

One other issue I saw and this was the case before I started this project: The trunk lid panel has different gap left and right side. Probably 5mm the left side gap and only 2mm at the right side.
The 4 bolts where trunk panel is bolted to the hinges cannot be adjusted to the side and the hinges themselves did not appear to be adjustable either.

So my question was: How can I adjust the trunk panel gap? How can I move the panel 2mm over to the right side?

update 2023.
It is two years now after the experiment installing the old rear windshield back. the milky spot on the lower left had dried out and I sealed the edge properly.
It did not hold up. After two years the milky spot is starting to show again!
It is not worth fighting the delamination- lession learned.

I want to fix this problem.

Some said that the glass for the later W126 will fit and lamination is not an issue in the later shields? If it would fit there is still the problem for obtaining a decent rear shield and to get it shipped without damage.

only other option is an aftermarket glass: Is there a decent aftermarket glass available for the early style 1984 W126 ?
