Broke Oil Cooler Line 1983 300D Turbo

One of my oil cooler like broke on my 300D today. Oil everywhere but made it home with low oil pressure. The previous owner did an alternative fix of their own (see photos) and I’m not sure how to fix their fix. What type of tubing is this? Is it going to break again should I rip it all out and go oem if possible? Suggestions?

I replaced my oil cooler lines last year. Upper and lower lines that connect to the oil cooler and run back to near the oil filter.

Looking at your pictures, I can't see what is going on or which line broke.

I suspect the previous owner took a short cut and replaced the flexible part of the oil line with rubber hoses. The rubber hose bursted. You can do the same with good quality hydraulic hoses. Or bite the bullet and replace all 2 with OEM. Replace with OEM is a lot of work. How long you want to keep the car? Good luck.

Replacing the oil lines is not that bad a job, but I have to admit I had a young friend with a hoist do mine. He was able to feed the new lines in from the rear. Access is a bit tight at the oil filter end, but he got it done. I modified some wrenches to make it a bit easier. There are threads here, likely with several different ways of doing the job.

The parts are not very expensive, but not that easy to find. One was a Cohline and the other from MTD, I think. Each in the $60-$80 range. Not sure OE are even available these days.

I imagine you could get car on road again by just replacing using high quality hose and clamps. The hose should be oil & heat resistant and have pressure rating well above the operating pressure. Double clamp if there is room.

I think there is a discussion here by someone who installed band-aid hoses like those. Maybe you bought his car :)

This is one thread - I am sure there are several others: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/302729-oil-cooler-line-replacement.html
