124- Window roll up & down with door key feature

OK I give up!

Just as soon as I think I've figured out the cool feature of being able to roll up all the windows (or roll them down) from outside the driver's door with the door lock, it doesn't work.

Would someone shed light on how these feature works?

Is there anything influencing the function, such as taking the key out and locking and then relocking?

Why is it that sometimes I can roll down all the windows ... and other times I can't? It is great to be able to have all the windows go down before getting into a hot car.

Thanks in advance.

"I feel your pain" (W.J.Clinton, ca. 1997).

On mine, to get 'em to go down, I first have to turn AND HOLD the key all the way to the LOCK position. After about 2 seconds, you can turn it all the way to the UNLOCK position and they should roll down.

Also, mine will only work from the doors, not the trunk latch.

As I understand it, the "function" is to close all the windows and sunroof. This is done by turning the key in either front door to lock the doors, holding the key in the locked position will close any open window and sunroof. As a safety feature, within a few seconds the process can be reversed by holding the key in the unlocked position, however, this only applies if the "function" to close the windows was used.

Therefore, you cannot open the windows/sunroof by holding the key in the unlocked position if the car has been sitting with the doors locked. To do this, you have to hold the key in the locked position to activate the close "function" first, then hold in the unlocked position.

Hope that isn't too confusing :)

Did you see the VW Jetta ad featuring a guy who figured this out and runs to grab his gf and shows it to her and she runs away ?

I found this feature on my W124 by accident... I don't remember reading it in the owner's manual...

This feature works both to roll-up and to roll-down the windows. When you use it to roll-up it also closes the sunroof. It will not open the sunroof.

Anybody else?

The roll down feature only works if it is done within 10 secs. of the lock first posistion....

I always knew about the "roll-up" convenience feature...

... but never about the roll-down. Thanks for the info! Just in time for summer. No go on the sunroof either Jeff.

The sun roof will only open if it was not fully closed from the roll up feature.
Once it is latched, it will not re-open w/roll down feature.
The roll down feature was not designed to be used as we like to do, but rather as a reversal feature for the roll up by mistake/danger
condition

So you fool it by going to the down position and then to the reversal posistion for down....

Has anyone ever installed anything to use that feature to roll up the windows on a single key click, where you don't have to hold it.

I know that some alarm systems do that, but since the car already has a central window/sunroof closer it can be done much easier that the alarm system and with less messing with the wiring.

Thanks
