M117 560SL Oil Pump Removal

I have a question regarding the removal of my oil pump. The manual https://www.tonk.ca/r107CD1/Program/Engine/107/M117_56/18-210.pdf says in step 3 “Place compensation weight of first crank pin in horizontal position”. What does that mean?

that means move cylinder 1 crank counter weight out of the way of the oil pan when it gets removed , it may collide with oil pan when pan removed , so it would be positioned cylinder 1 , 90 degrees

Thanks Nulu. Obviously this is for the 2 piece pan and not mine. I’ve never rebuilt an engine before so I never heard of this counter weight. All I was going to do was replace the rear seal which turned into a rear cover plate which turned into a pan gasket which turned into the front timing cover removal because I found the lower guides prices in the oil pump. Which turned into a wiring harness rebuild after removing engine which then will turn into a valve job because I see the valve guides/seals leak on a couple of cylinders. I bet I’ll be putting in rings & pistons & grinding cams & cranks before this is over. I have been documenting the entire car rebuild on my YouTube channel

if anyone is interested
