Red face 1994 E420 no power after 4000 RPM

Had a 1994 E420 come into the shop with a no power after 4000 RPM.. I took it out and god it wouldnt get out of first gear with out lifting off the gas... I thought hmmmmm maybe pluged fuel filter... I noticed when i would try to make the car go it would get hot!!! when going, and cool back down when off the gas... Hmmmmm.. went back to the shop and cut the cats off and one had come apart inside it self and melted together.. Could not see light through the other one either... I am not sure where to put new cats on or just put a pipe in there for now ? What do you guys think ??

For what its worth, my 400E doesnt have a check engine light either. I dont think they came with them? Maybe other owners can clarify. I would replace the whole front pipe with an OE one. Aftermarket cats arent that durable from my experience. Either that or run pipes, although the exhaust will smell bad without the cats and the owners might not like that. It will also be a little louder.
