Anyone use epoxy to seal engine crack

73 450sl has a 1/12 inch engine crack. Not actively leaking, but there is dry coolant residue. My only choice seems to epoxy it. Any experiences and recommendations of products?

Do you run a coolant sealant in your system? As you don't seem to be into oil, that might work well.

JB Weld is pretty good stuff, might be worth a throw of the dice.

I did some research on using epoxy to fill in some eroded spots on the gasket surface of the head and exhaust manifolds on the Ford FE 390 I just rebuilt. I went with Devcon Steel Putty. It does not have the bonding strength that the more liquid epoxies have but does have the durability I was looking for.

Check out Project Farm's video's on epoxies. He tests them with real world techniques and expectations.

I'm currently anti coolant sealers, I believe that they led to the cracking of my block due to the pressure relief in the radiator cap getting stuck shut. I may be right, I may be wrong. Your mileage may vary. In my case, it blew the lower hose off, cracked the thermostat housing, blew out a freeze plug and cracked the block.

If it isn't leaking consider leaving it alone. JB Weld can be used to cover the crack but a sealant added to the coolant that would get pressured into the crack would be better. To stop the spread of a crack a hole should be drilled at the end of it, I definitely wouldn't do that in this case if it isn't leaking.

Good luck!!!

1/12 inch = .083"
Is that the length of the crack? Or the width of the crack? Or the depth of the crack? Or all of the above?

Engine crack. What is the location on the engine of the crack?

Are any of these questions relevant to the opinions of the epoxy experts?
