Rebuilt 722.3 Rev & 1st Only - intermittent (1995 W124 E320)
Hello Transmission experts - I have a '95 E320 US with a 722.369 trans. I lost reverse, so pulled and rebuilt the trans using new bands, clutches, seals. Its working great. Driven about 100 miiles or so since rebuild. When functional, the shift points, firmness, and kickdown are good. But the following problem is occurring: intermittent will not engage in gear selector position D or 3, but R and 2 are fine. Occasionally, D and 3 gear selector position will engage.
In reviewing the excellent 722.3 service manual: http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/other/tranny_722_repair.pdf on Page 1.3/1 table of clutch and bands actuations suggests this could be a B2 piston or band issue. This suggestion is also (somewhat) supported by the excellent https://www.motor-talk.de/forum/aktion/Attachment.html?attachmentId=794727 which describes the B2 issue in some detail, although my 1995 trans has the updated T shaped nylon piston seal and the nylon piston sleeve bushing set into the case. Please let me know what you think and or how to test. It seems progressively more frequent problem. Thank you for reading. KenH in DC Last edited by kenh in dc; 11-08-2022 at 07:52 PM. Quote:
1) There is no engagement in selector positions "D or 3". 2) The transmission will not complete shifts into 3rd or 4th gear, although 1st, 2nd, and reverse do work. If the first, inspect and/or adjust the selector linkage. If the second, clutch and/or accumulator K1 is indicted. |

Hi Frank. Thank you for your response and note on clarity.
When dysfunctional: 1) the gear selector and shift lever are functional and not binding, but I'll check for free-play at each gear selector and valve-body shift lever detent. 2) the transmission clutches will not engage except in gear selector positions R and 2 When Functional: 1) the gear selector and shift lever are functional and not binding. 2) transmission reverse and forward clutches engage in all R D 3 2 positions and will shift up and down normally. Summary: Reverse works normally. Neutral works normally. There is no engagement when placed in gear selector positions D and or 3, except after starting in 2 and manually shifting up. 2nd gear engages immediately when placed in gear selector position 2. When upshift manually from gear selector position 2 to 3 and then D, the subsequent downshifts will not re-engage in 2nd gear, unless i move the selector lever down. I'll research how to check complete accumulator. Thank you. Last edited by kenh in dc; 11-08-2022 at 06:34 PM. |
