replacing power steering hoses 1998 C230 W202

I took on this project yesterday and thought i'd post some tips.

1. move the windshield washer fluid reservoir out of the way. its held in place with one plastic 10mm nut. i set mine up near the brake fluid reservoir. the hose and wires are just long enough.

2. arm yourself with a variety of tools to unbolt the high pressure hose from the steering box. I used a stubby 4" open end wrench, regular open end wrench and a crows foot connected to a ratchet via a short extension. I think its about 2". i ended up using all 3 17MM size

3. i removed the low pressure return hose first. this runs from the cooler tub near the radiator to the steering box. I put a clamp on the line near the lower end to keep power steering fluid from pouring out and making a mess.
on my car once i removed the hose clamp near the steering box i could not pull off the hose so I used an razor blade knife to cut a slit thru the hose length wise until i could pull the hose off.
once that was done i could remove the hose.

4. next the high pressure hose. i loosened the connection at the pump, and carefully un screwed the connection and plugged the hole. i suppose you could have a container handy to let the fluid drain, used the stubby wrench to break the connection at the steering gear box and unscrewed and removed the hose.

5. there is a third low pressure hose from the cooler to the lowest point of the pump. on this one you could unscrew the lower connection and then catch any fluid in a container.

6 installed the pressure hose first as its buried. takes some jiggling to get the nut started on the steering gear box but once started it will slowly tighten using the variety of tools. the connection at the pump is easy.

7. next low pressure line from cooler to gearbox. on my car the original line had a hard line about midway that had a bracket to secure the line to the car.
now the return line is just bulk hose. i cut away the fittings at each end of the metal part, capped each end with vacuum plugs and mounted it back in the car. from there installed the low pressure hose from gear box to cooler. re using the hose clamps.
here is where the old metal part came into play, i protected the new hose with some larger 1" pieces of another hose and zip tied it in 2 places along the old metal part. each end

8 last the short low pressure line from cooler to pump, used the old hose to measure the length needed and cut a piece from the bulk hose. re used the hose clamps and installed. on my car one clamp was a phillips head and the other a flat / nut screw.

overall not a hard job just annoying to reach the connections at the gearbox.
in other forums folks have reached the high pressure nut from below.

hope this helps someone
