I have a chance to get a Momo steering wheel for my '89 190E, therefore, I would like some help on the procedures for installing it. What exactly has to be done and what should I be concerned about in regards to the airbag in the current wheel.

can't help you with installing it, but I have just bought a 190 with a momo wheel and it does have its down side! feels nice, looks good and is good to use but it restricts sight of the speedometer, so you have to peer over or under the steering wheel to check whether or not you are breaking the speed limit! Incidentally - the car came with momo wheels as well - very nice!

This subject has been somewhat covered before. Use the search function on the Shop Forum and look for a message containing the words "airbag replacement". The search function can be accessed by selecting "search" in the upper right hand corner of this page.
This may help you...or leave you with more questions! ------------------ '98 E430 MBCA-Peachtree |
Thanks for the tip but there isn't anything useful in search. At least I couln't find it. Your suggestion only turned up 2 threads and one of them was this one.

You will need a T-30 torx driver to get the airbag off and a 10mm allen to remove the wheel. Be sure to use a black marker to mark where the old wheel came off for realignment. Also do not turn on the ignition with the airbag out for it will set a fault code.

Thanks for the info. I have also heard it is a good idea to disconnect the battery while changing the wheel. Is this true or is it unnecessary?
|
Frank-
The reason I told you yesterday to do a search for the words "airbag replacement" is because one of the 2 messages you found specifically discusses the requirements for disconnecting the battery when replacing the airbag. Most of the new aftermarket wheels from tuners such as Brabus for example require you to remove your airbag and reinstall it on the new wheel. Regardless if you decide to keep your airbag, I would still recommend that you follow the same cautions outlined by Benzmac in his post on airbag replacement. Airbags can potentially be deadly! ------- Bill Wood MercedesShop.com, LLC |
Benzmac,
The impression I got from your instructions is that I have to put the airbag back on the new steering wheel. Is this correct? I don't want to re-attach the airbag! How does this affect any airbag sensors or fault codes? Thanks in Advance Frank Vusir |
Frank, is your new wheel equiped to handle the bag? If so you should re-connect it so you won't set the code for the bag.

No, the new wheel does not support an airbag. What happens if I install it anyway? How does setting the fault code affect the car?

There must be a way to jumper or bypass the airbag sensor so that I can remove the airbag but the system thinks it is there.
Does anyone know how to accomplish this? Frank |
Frank-
You may not get an answer to your question about how to defeat the airbag. Any Tech that provides this info is putting himself at risk from a liability standpoint. Publishing ways to defeat safety systems or providing info on the best way to defeat security systems is not something most Techs will do. I hope you understand. ------------------ Bill Wood - Webmaster MercedesShop.com, LLC |
I don't agree that publishing ways to remove a safety feature (airbag) is in any way wrong, since (a) it doesn't affect anyone other than myself and (b) there are newer model vehicles of the same type that don't even have an airbag. I do agree that publicly publishing a bypass to a security system is not appropriate
However, I can appreciate and respect why any Tech would not want to publish this information to eliminate any chance of damaging their reputations! Thank you all for your replies. |
Frank, thanks for being open minded enough to see our views...Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
