300CD Brakes Going Going, , , ,

I drove over to my brothers home for Thanksgiving yesterday. About 2 miles from his house, when applying the brakes, whoa! the pedal went way down. Brakes worked, pumped pedal & it came up. Checked at his place, fluid was OK. Drove home, on freeway!, no stops & driving slower than traffic, no braking necessary. (late afternoon, very little traffic). Got home & noticed no brake lites either. Woke up at 09:00 this morning, have not looked at anything yet. I am thinking master cylinder, this one was installed about 12 years ago. What does one cost these days? Is rebuilding a viable option?

Yes bad MC. Replace it if the brake fluid hasn't been flushed regularly. Rebuild? Eh, maybe if you know what you're doing on them. Compare the cost first.

Good luck!!!

Replaced calipers, one was bad, replaced both.

Replaced master cylinder, system acts just like before the M-cylinder was replaced. (see 1st post). Maybe the old (cast iron! new one is chinee aluminium, no core charge) M-C is still good??

Brake pressure sender?? where's that?

I thought MB used an electric switch for brakes?

In 3rd pic, I happen to have a set of those 'cans'! Got 'em in 1967.

the electric switch only activates the brake lights. I suspect a insufficient bleeding.
