I have a 1987 190E with 50k miles. The A/C compressor does not engage at any setting. I have replaced the relay and checked all fuses. Also, the Auxiliary cooling fan does not come on. Are they related?. Any help
would be appreciated.

Have you check the overheating cut out sersor
it locate at right side of the coolant pump!
just disconnect the(single)wire see if engage
or the evaporator temp sensor.is locate under wiper motor screen cover next to the battery,is a 4 inchs sensor with wire & connector, the new should have metle one in there.

Aux fan only come when engine is over 110c or
air condition is on freon pressure is over 250psi if the fan switch is red at drier (green switch is over 300psi).if you have the green one replace it with red switch this
way air condition will work batter.

My 190E(88) is having the same problem,
after checking thru, I notice there are
some oil leakage under the compressor.
Just wonder if this can be rectify by
replacing some oil sheild or o ring.
Will the compressor auto cut off if all
the oil are leak out.
Thanks

You need a new compressor,if the system is
low on freon the control unit will cut of A\C
compressor.

I will send it for repair this weekend
and replace the green fan switch with red
one. Thanks.

For the benefit of others, removing the wire from the overheating cutout sensor resulted in the a/c compressor clutch engaging. Problem solved. Thank you for your help. This is a unique and helpful BB.

Where exactly is this red or green sensor located and how many wires are going to it?

altan 05-28-1999 12:42 PM

The switch is at the drier and it is
only 2 wire going to it.

What is the temp sensor for evaporator look like and what does it do?

Benzmac 05-29-1999 09:43 PM

The sensor is to regulate the compressor so the evaporator does not freeze up. It is located inside the heater box in most cases.
